08:24 pm - Girls, don't be afraid to exercise
From an article in the NYT's called "More Than An Exercise In Vanity"

"While women often say they are afraid they will bulk up, this fear is unfounded, Dr. Kraemer and others say. Acquiring muscle mass requires testosterone levels that women don’t have. Instead, the toning that many women say they want comes from lifting heavy weights.

The most effective way to stimulate muscles is with a system known as progressive resistance. This approach can take about three hours a week and includes days, once a week or so, when you lift weights so heavy that you can do only three to five repetitions before your muscles are too tired to lift again.

Other days are devoted to moderate resistance, with weights you can lift 8 to 10 times. And then you should have some light days, with weights you can lift 12 to 15 times before your muscles tire."

Healthy living ftw.

07:59 pm - Thoughts on music and other things
How do you listen to music?
  1. Do you take it in the context of the moment?
  2. The context of an album? The context of an artist's career?
  3. Do you consider it based on its chart success?
  4. What your friends say about it (too many to hyperlink)?
  5. What your boyfriend/girlfriend says about it (even more)?
When is a song really great and when is it great because?

Sleep-inspired

These questions came into my mind as I slept post-exam this morning (Questions in a dream... how profound), listening to this new band I had discovered a week or so ago called Mogwai*. The way I came upon this band is unique. I didn't hear them on the radio, no one recommended them to me, I never even heard about them before having their entire discography in the palm of my hands. I could not resist the temptation of album titles as brilliant as Mr Beast, or Happy Songs for Happy People (this last title reminded me of Milka upon first seeing actually LOL (to keep things in balance, the phrase/word(?) "LOL" reminds me of Michelle now (Click the link and just check those section titles haha))).

Now what is the point of the first half of this post?

I guess I like to think that because I was listening to Mogwai in such a vacuum, I really got to the essence of their music. I basically added all their songs to my play list as a giant blob sorted alphabetically, set my Winamp on shuffle and pressed play. Despite not knowing what songs were playing, despite no knowledge of what album the song was on, its chart performance, what people thought of it, I realize that I really like the music they create and all in all, they are a f@!king awesome band.

Qualifications

*Mogwai is a different sort of band. It's part of the genre known as post-rock characterized pretty much by rock instrumentation with no vocals. In this way its that much harder to distinguish songs from each other as some of them can be as long as 16 minutes or as short as a minute and a half.

Unrelated Life Updates

This is the beginning of a conscious effort on my part to blog more considering the many benefits I perceive blogging to have on an individuals writing, even just his thought process in general. This blog post by my favorite marketer was the inspiration.

I particularly love the way he ended it by posing those awesome questions to everyone. I shall repost them here in tribute.

Thought provoking

"What would happen if every single high school student had to have a blog? Or every employee in your company? Or every one of your customers?"

To take it a step further, your maids? Or your driver? Or majority of the Philippine workforce? Or your Lola/Lolo? Or your Mom and Dad (LOL)? What would they have to say and... why?

I realize, blogging has the potential to be the ultimate conduit to tapping into the intellectual capital of and entire society. The only real requirment is being able to read and write at the most basic level. Nevertheless, having all the information is nice. The real question is How can it be turned into something useful? I feel that the fate of that question is intricately connected to the possibility of great change all over the place, but with special emphasis on the Philippines.

The End At Last

Thank God, only two exams left on the calendar before summer and the great PWC internship begins! Also, I know some people who are going or who have already gone to boracay (you bums) I only wish I had the option in this frigid country haha. Hopefully everything is going great for them.

Alright, that's enough rambling for today. After having written all this and rereading it, it probably should have been in two separate posts but honestly... who really cares? LOL

05:12 pm - 10 random facts
*Each blogger starts with ten random facts/habits about themselves.

*Bloggers that are tagged need to write on their own blog about their ten things and post these rules.

*At the end of your blog, you need to choose ten people to get tagged and list their names.

Since i was tagged by the cute and adorable regina trish, i must oblige.

1. i have a bag of almonds in my room for snacking (mhmm!)
2. i sleep with two giant fur(let me repeat, GIANT. FUR.) blankets to keep me warm during the winter, they probably weigh 15-20lbs in total.
3. my life functionionality/efficiency/productiveness/usefulness/meaning increases when i do things with a friend, or you can say, i enjoy life more with other (likeminded) people rather than alone.
4. despite this, i do many things alone (LOL)

5. i currently keep a food journal and a training journal (both to add accountability to my daily existance). at various times in my life i've kept an actual journal(to blow off steam) and a dream journal(to make sense of the nonsensical).
6. i am a recovering nice guy.
7. i wish all my close friends had Skype because a good portion don't live in the same country as i do
8. i lose all discipline when it comes to eating when i go back to manila!
9. there is an aspiring photographer/athelete/chef/nutrionist/personal trainer inside of me, in actuality i am a business student
10. i can't think of anymore! open to questions in the comment section for this one lol :))

I tag Milka and Michelle, actually they've probably already done this before.

12:28 am - Walking the uhh... line
I watched Walk The Line over a month ago on the plane flight back to Canada and its a movie that still occupies my thoughts today. The main reason it still lingers in my head is the relationship that the film established between June and Johnny played by Reese Witherspoon and Joaquin Phoenix respectively.

[Warning: THIS Crappy ass summary DOES NOT DO THE FILM JUSTICE AT ALL! SEE IT AND SEE WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT FIRST HAND!]
Here were two people from completely different circumstances who as soon as they saw each other, knew they were absolutely meant for one another and proved it through their enduring marriage (after divorces to their respective spouses... lol) which lasted for over 35 years, literally til death did them part. From all outward appearances based on the film and on other sources (wikipedia and such lol) this was as close to true love as there could be in real life.

This affected me particularly because I've seen how superficial and for-convenience relationships the people around me are getting into or are in (even if they themselves don't see it that way... ultimately I just know in my gut, which may admittedly be symptomatic of a much larger personal issue i have to deal with.. LOL) and it seriously got me thinking whether finding the person you truly are supposed to be with can still happen nowadays.

Rhetorical question!

All i know is, I'm not settling for anything less than my very own June,

Also, awesome music from Walk the Line!

09:42 am - ahh the holidays
They've finally started for me. SCHOOL is at last over for a few weeks and with a vacation that includes visiting family in HK and Manila what more can I ask for. Just some random factoids since i haven't blogged in a while.

I am so excited to see everyone again from my parents, my sisters to FRANCIS who deserves a special mention becaus i haven't seen in God knows how long, plus he is apparently FAT (need to confirm with eyes to believe). Also looking forward to hanging out with all the guys, and having some hilarous drinking sessions! Should be fun as HELL! Plus i NEED this break from the terrible terrible freezing weather afflicting Canada at the moment.

The only dilemma i have now is trying to rein in my holiday binge eating.. now typically i gain 10-15lbs every trip back i take and hopefully i can keep the pounds gained to a minimum this year. I'm hoping for a 0 increase (HIGHLY unlikely). I realize Pretty much that when the only thing you have to worry about is LIMITING what you eat, life is good :).

ALSO, I'm in HK today, completely alone and not knowing what I'm going to do! The plan so far is just to explore Causeway Bay, hopefully find an awesome place to eat, grab some dessert somewhere and head back home.

Movies I want to see when i get back include Enchanted, Charlie Wilson's War, Walk Hard etc etc, i'll probably end up seeing a LOT more than that though.

Also, looking forward to some strategic planning on future business endeavours, plans and such.

Hopefully I actually see some OPM bands live, discover some new local artists, run into people i don't expect etc etc. Ahh Soon enough :):)

01:40 am - Terrible!
Well i smashed my laptop this weekend (repair bill = at least a grand not counting the fact that i'm still paying for it til december 2008, in other words i've got no moolah), bombed an Ernst & Young interview I had this afternoon, and have a midterm tomorrow at 8:30am which I'm reviewing for right now.

My brother asked me when was the last time i prayed, honestly i can't recall. He's telling me i've forgotten about God and how important He is in my life. All i have to say is i'm not ready to deal with that at this point in time.

Worst thing though is realizing that how much it still bothers me to see pictures of her after all these months.

Here's to the impossible hope that things end well for me, one of these days.

Live each day like it's your last.

Cheers.

12:38 pm - Nice guys finish last
From an article i found on a hiphop blog:

"A wise man once told me, "As a man, you have to die once in order to live." I never fully appreciated his advice, nor did I understand it until I experienced it firsthand. From that time on, I understood the origins of the Jerk vs. Nice Guy battle.

Readers may be asking themselves, "What in the world is this guy talking about?" Well, I'm referring to the widely known fact that women habitually date men that are jerks while the "nice" guys are often left twiddling their thumbs in solitaire. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Figuratively speaking, in order for a man to enjoy the company of women and be able to seduce them, his inner nice guy must first die through heartache. It is at this point that his inner bad boy surfaces and goes on the prowl.

Any man that has experienced true love, only to have his heart crushed by the woman that he thought he would spend his life with, will understand what I am talking about. A man that has never experienced the heartache of being burned by the one person he really trusted probably won't understand my commentary. In any case, it is important to understand why nice guys finish last and why they probably always will."

Sad but true. And glad that I'm done with that particular baptism of fire.

and...

"No, I’m not one of those, “nice guys,” that the article talks about, I’m too smart for that. But I just seem to care about certain things more than the average man. Never had it in me just to tap for the sake of it. While I’ve never been in love, I may be at the point where the article states, “As a man, you have to die once in order to live.” Seems like caring about people tends to be a waste of time in the long run. So what is a man to do, try to be nice and risk getting played or just become a jerk and run through mad chicks? With being nice you open yourself up to get hurt. With being a jerk you lack a real connection to anyone and things just get meaningless after a while."

AMEN

03:08 pm - Graduation Album Review
Graduation is the third and final installment in Kanye's school-themed album trilogy which began in 2004 with the classic album, The College Dropout.

First let me say that Kanye West is one of my favorite artists of all time as he is constantly pushing the boundaries of his music, previously enlisting the help of classically trained producer Jon Brion for his sophomore effort, Late Registration, a move which was unheard of in hiphop at the time. As a rapper, even though many hiphop heads feel he doesn't have the best flow, I find his lyrics easy to relate to and his delivery catchy and inventive as hell.

Let me say straight up that this album for the most part is a huge leap musically from his previous albums in that it sounds VERY different. This album is the FRESHEST thing I have heard in a while and I can tell you quite definitely that there is NOTHING out there in the hiphop market place that sounds even remotely as good as the Graduation. It's a tight 13 tracks, without any of the skits that littered his previous albums. Synthesizers play a much larger role compared to his first two albums and that's probably because of the current hiphop music scene where synth has become quite common.

The key difference between the synth in Graduation with the other synth heavy songs out there is that Kanye knows how to leverage that shiet! On tracks like Stronger, Champion, I Wonder, Flashing Lights, Good Life, Can’t Tell Me Nothing and Big Brother some icey cool, squeaky clean electronic synthesizer action hits you at just the right times... and it feels amazing.

It isn’t just all synth though as there is the requisite no frills gangsta beat (In College Dropout it was “Get’em High” ft. Talib Kweli & Common, and on Late Registration was “Drive Slow” ft. Paul Wall & GLC) in the form of Barry Bonds ft. Lil Wayne. I absolutely LOVE Lil Wayne and I really tried hard to like his verse in this song but it… just… sucks. Thankfully Kanye manages to salvage it with some nice wordplay/delivery on his part.

Another song with the noticeable lack of synth is Everything I Am, another album highlight. Kanye muses on himself, and his success over a laid back beat which Common turned down (Why Com?! Your album sucked balls, definitely could’ve used this ). There is some awesome scratching courtesy of DJ Premier as well. The chorus and the scratching are insanely catchy “I am stuck in your head” material, so listen at your own risk!

The Glory is another sweet track which is a throwback to his College Dropout days. Kanye proves that he still knows how to speed up those samples to awesome effect. Particularly cool is how he opens the song with some off key singing before jumping into his verse with a simple yet effective “Yea”, declaring that the time for screwing around is done and the MC has arrived!
“I did it for the Glory” Got to respect that!

Homecoming has Chris Martin singing a surprisingly catchy chorus (surprising because the last time he tried to sing a chorus in a hip hop song, 2006’s horrible bubonic plague like Jay-Z song Beach Chair, I needed to get a new ear) over a Rocky Balboa-esque beat. This is basically Kanye’s ode to Chicago which I can relate to a bit considering yea home is somewhere else for me too.

All the songs are quite infectious with the exception of one... one that absolutely boggles me. How could a perfectionist such as Kanye make such a shitty track?! The song I'm referring to is "Drunk and Hot girls" ft. Mos Def. It’s a lazy plodding tribute to drunk and hot girls. I would compare listening to this song with hitting yourself with a hammer multiple times. Just… don’t…

Overall, aside from that one hiccup, Graduation is a sweet album. An instant classic in my eyes and on par with The College Dropout I feel in terms of music quality.

Classics that will only get better as time goes by from the album are: Champion, I Wonder, Good Life, Stronger, Can’t Tell Me Nothing, Flashing Lights, Everything I Am, The Glory.

Track that I hated the moment I heard it: Drunk and Hot Girls (because being brain dead is not a future goal of mine)

Tracks I will probably hate after a few more spins:
Homecoming - because of Chris Martin being SO grating in hiphop songs, he utilizes the Eminem effect on his voice when he sings hiphop choruses, for some reason layering it over and over til it just sounds like a cyborg with some qtips in his mouth trying to sing. GOD! For now though.. it’s fine… lol)
Barry Bonds - because Lil Wayne absolutely disappoints me on this song. WHY WAYNE WHY? VMA performance was amazing though so he definitely has not fallen off.)
Big Brother – because of the… subject matter. I have a big brother myself and listening to this song bothers me… lol

Misc:
There is a huge THANK YOU note inside the album if you do purchase it. Nice to feel appreciated!
Album art is simply amazing, I love it when you can tell just by looking at the album cover that this music is going to be something special.
When I said this was the best hiphop release of 2007, I meant it! I’ve listened to everything from Brother Ali to Plies to 50 Cent to Common to Talib Kweli to Fabolous to T-Pain to R.Kelly to T.i. to Pharaoh Monche to Devin the Dude to UGK and yea, this is by far the most enjoyable hiphop album of this year.

So i'm finally back in Canada after a 41 day vacation... some notable things to ermm... note... lol

Favorite Book of the trip:
Hitori Nakano's Train Man.

The "Internet Generation Love Story from Japan", tells the story of a geek who stands up for a girl being harassed on a train and they develop a friendship afterwards. The geek being inexperienced dealing with the opposite sex, seeks help and advice from an online community on what he should do to woo this girl's heart. Told through the perspective of the forum posts of Train Man and anonymous forum posters.

SHIT i gobbled this baby up in a matter of hours. Ultimately seemed too good to be true but what is fiction good for?!

Favorite Movie of the trip:
Music & Lyrics
fo mp3s:

With three huge blockbusters released during my stay in the PHP, Shrek, Spiderman and Pirates (which were all pretty disappointing IMO) this should be pretty surprising. i saw it at the last possible time as well... on the plane ride back to Canada haha. Well what can i say.. i needed to be uplifted. Travelling alone and away is pretty depressing. This film... the corniness, lightheartedness, drew barrymore and hugh grant(LOL) just hit the spot for me. I ended up watching it 3x, the first fully paying attention to it, the 2nd and 3rd while reading a book. awesome sound track. Pop goes my heart is an instant classic. And Way back into love resonates with me personally (lol!) def def good stuff. Grabbed the soundtrack already lol!

Favorite Tracks:
3 way tie!!!
R Kelly - i'm a flirt (Remix)
T-pain - buy u a drank (shawty snappin')
R Kelly & Usher - same girl

oh man.. what can i say the king of rnb bringin it on his new album! LOL seriously im a flirt is hilarious filled with singable, memorable hooks and a catchy as hell chorus. same girl is PURE karaoke material and buy u a drank has the amazing Final Fantasy III sample going for it.

Favorite OPM albummmm:
Tala-arawan, Sugarfree.

Dear Kuya is spot on. It's about being there for anybody PERIOD. Ikaw Pala, Kung Ayaw Mo NA Sa Akin, Wag Ka Nang Umiyak, Batang Bata ka pa classics! haven't really 'listened' to the rest of the album yet but man just on the concept and album design i was sold completely! WIN.

Runner ups would be...
Silent Sanc - Fuschiang Pag-ibig
Sandwich - 5 on the Floor
